Competitors from Railway to Freeway
by Larry Fisher
22" high X 28" wide Original Acrylic Painting.
Competitors, a pair of southbound Pacific Electric 'Blimps' race a Metropolitan Coach Line bus along the Long Beach Freeway in the summer of 1955.
The Pacific Electric, once considered the world's largest interurban system, is now in her final years of service...the Long Beach Line was the last trolley route of the Pacific Electric. It was terminated in April 1961.
The Big Red Cars served Southern California for almost 60 years. ..but automobiles and freeways proved to be too great of a competition.
